Managing Projects in the Built Environment is an APM Endorsed live online construction project management course for experienced project and programme managers working across construction, building services and the wider built environment.
Developed by BESA in partnership with project management training specialists Provek, the programme responds to the Building Safety Act 2022 and rising expectations around competence, governance and accountability. It focuses on the specialist areas that may be only partly covered, or absent, from traditional project management qualifications.
The course is mapped to the built environment-specific content of the Competence Framework for Project Managers in the Built Environment in England. It covers building safety, risk assurance, procurement, information management, stakeholder engagement and sustainability throughout the project lifecycle.

Before You Enrol: Check This Course Is Right for You
Existing project management experience is required.
You do not have to hold the APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ) or another formal project management qualification. However, a qualification such as the APM PMQ is strongly beneficial because this course does not teach core project management principles.
It builds on existing knowledge and experience by concentrating on the additional requirements of managing projects in the built environment.

This is not a general introduction to project management. It complements established qualifications such as the APM PMQ by concentrating on the built environment-specific knowledge and responsibilities created or reinforced by building safety reform.
Successful completion can help you evidence relevant knowledge as part of your wider professional development and demonstration of competence. A qualification alone does not replace the experience, skills and behaviours required to perform a role competently.
Course Content
1. Built Environment Legal and Regulatory Context
Explore the Building Safety Act 2022, dutyholder interfaces, higher-risk buildings, gateways and the project manager's role in governance, leadership and escalation.
2. Building Safety Risk Assurance
Understand the distinction between building safety and occupational health and safety, including safety case concepts, risk governance and assurance processes.
3. Procurement and Commercial Decision-Making for Safety
Learn how procurement strategies, commercial decisions, warranties, insurance arrangements and defect management can influence safety outcomes.
4. Information Management and the Golden Thread
Develop your understanding of Golden Thread principles, safety-critical information and the project manager's role in information governance.
5. Design and Construction Process Literacy
Build awareness of design stages, construction sequencing, fire safety concepts and inclusive design principles to support informed coordination and assurance.
6. Stakeholders, Residents and Occupied Buildings
Gain practical insight into resident engagement, communicating safety risks and working effectively within occupied buildings.
7. Sustainability in the Built Environment
Understand how sustainability interacts with safety, quality, cost and programme outcomes throughout the project lifecycle.
Course Format and Preparation
- Live learning: Two consecutive days delivered online through a virtual classroom.
- Guided learning: 14 hours.
- Pre-course study: Allow approximately four to five hours to familiarise yourself with the Competence Framework for Project Managers in the Built Environment and the Building Safety Act. The framework will be provided after enrolment.
- Total qualification time: 20 hours, including preparation and assessment.
Assessment and Certification
The course concludes with a 90-minute online examination containing 56 questions. These include multiple-choice, complex multiple-choice and assertion-reason questions. A score of 70% is required to pass.
Certification is awarded following successful completion of the programme and assessment.
Important: Online Assessment Requirements
The examination is remotely proctored. Before registering for the assessment, you will need:
- A valid passport or driving licence for identity verification.
- A PC or laptop with a working camera and reliable internet connection.
- A private, quiet room where you will not be interrupted.
Identity verification can take between four and eight hours to confirm, so complete it well before you plan to sit the examination.
