The BESA DW145 Fire Damper Inspection and Maintenance Course has been designed around DW145: Guide to Good Practice for the Installation, Design and Selection, Inspection and Maintenance of Fire Dampers. It is also aligned with the fire damper components of National Occupational Standard BSEFSD04 and responds to the industry’s growing focus on technical competence and safety.
This is a hybrid course. The theory is delivered online through BESA Academy, while the practical training and assessment are delivered in person at BESA-approved training centres.
On successful completion, you will have demonstrated the skills and knowledge needed to carry out fire damper inspection and maintenance. You will also receive an EAL certificate, which can be used to apply for the Blue Skilled Worker SKILLcard.
Who Is the Course For?

This course is recommended for learners aged 18 or over who are currently involved in fire damper inspection or a related role. Learners must be able to complete a portfolio of site-based inspection evidence within the required timeframe.
Relevant roles and experience may include:
- Fire damper inspectors and technicians
- HVAC, ductwork or ventilation engineers with an understanding of fire dampers
- Firestopping professionals with access to suitable inspection opportunities
- Specialist maintenance providers carrying out fire damper inspections
It is the learner’s responsibility to obtain and submit the required workplace evidence within six months.
Health, Safety And Environment Test
You must have an in-date Health, Safety and Environment Test. Evidence will need to be uploaded, checked and confirmed before you begin the practical element of the course.

Practical Training In Centre

Type 1, 2, 3 and 4 inspection types
Carry out each level of fire damper inspection in line with BESA DW145, from visual checks through to detailed internal examination, identifying defects and assessing condition. -
Testing
Operate and functionally test fire dampers using calibrated instruments and recognised industry methods, confirming correct activation, closure and reset. -
Maintenance
Plan and carry out scheduled maintenance activities, including confirming job readiness, coordinating with other trades and site services, and establishing safe isolation procedures where required. -
Repair
Remove, replace or repair fire dampers, components and associated equipment, followed by reinspection and testing to confirm correct operation. -
Theory test, practical assessment and preparation for the portfolio
Demonstrate overall competence through a written knowledge check, a supervised practical assessment and guided preparation of evidence for your professional portfolio.

Portfolio Build
The portfolio must demonstrate practical skills and knowledge in the inspection, testing and maintenance of fire dampers in accordance with UK legislation and recognised industry guidance. A portfolio template will be provided.
The portfolio must contain evidence of at least four fire damper inspection and maintenance activities that you have personally undertaken in the workplace.
Once your assessor is satisfied with the evidence provided, you will be invited to a recorded 30-minute professional discussion. This will confirm your knowledge and understanding of the activities you have completed.
The portfolio should include evidence such as:

- Compartmentation drawings
- Asset registers
- Previous inspection reports
- Photographs

- Maintenance documentation

Carry out fire damper inspections and maintenance activities in the workshop, followed by practical assessment. -
